The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Wednesday directed counsel for Rangers to submit a report of Joint Investigation Team (JIT) probing the matter pertaining to detention of a student by paramilitary forces under Pakistan Protection Act. A division bench headed by Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar was seized with the hearing of a petition filed by Muhammad Nadeem Rana, who moved the court against paramilitary forces for detaining his son unlawfully.
The petitioner submitted that his son Muhammad Hanif Rana, a pre-engineering student, was taken away by Rangers from Usmanabad area of Lyari during a raid. He said that Rangers officials later produced him before the special court where he was remanded to Rangers custody for 90 days under Section 11-E of Pakistan Protection Ordinance (PPO) 2013.
The petitioner said that his son is innocent and his detention mere on suspension of his involvement in crime under new anti-terrorism law was absolutely based on mollified intention and prejudice. He requested the court to declare detention of his son by paramilitary forces illegal and call report from Rangers on why he was kept in detention.
Counsel for Rangers informed the court that matter regarding detention of petitioner's son was referred to JIT but its report is awaited. The bench directed him to inform the court about latest update on JIT on next hearing of case. Hearing of case was adjourned till July 09.
