Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui of Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Thursday directed the federal government to submit reply within 15 days in four identical petitions challenging the appointment of Dr Mukhtar Ahmad as chairman of the Higher Education Commission (HEC), his previous appointment as Executive Director of HEC, modified salary package, his alleged irregularities and dual degrees.
On June 25, 2014, petitioner Arsal Ikram through Muhammad Shoaib Shaheen Advocate has moved IHC while naming Prime Minister's Secretariat, Secretary Establishment Division, Ministry of Education, Training and Standards in Higher Education, Federal Minister for Water & Power and Defence Khwaja Muhammad Asif and HEC Chairman Dr Mukhtar Ahmad as respondents. He submitted before the court that Dr Mukhtar Ahmad had been appointed as HEC chairman in violation of law, rules and eligibility criteria. The court, while adjourning hearing of the petition, had directed that all petitions pertaining to Dr Mukhtar Ahmad should be clubbed and fixed before the court in first week of July.
