Although Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Najam Sethi had claimed that he is not paid by PCB, Transparency International Pakistan has received a complaint that PCB has paid Rs 2,698,841/- to him. Chairman, Transparency International Pakistan, Sohail Muzaffar in a letter sent to Sethi on July 3, 2014 has placed certain facts relating to his appointment and remuneration.
The complainant has sent a copy of cheque No: 9687452, which indicates that on April 25, 2014 PCB has paid him Rs 2,698,841 from its account with AL-Barka Bank, Hali Road, Lahore, Account No 01328235011, and that PCB has also not deducted a 6% WHT on this payment, which is a violation of Income Tax Ordinance 2001, Section 149&153.
On the face of it, as it has been reported in media that he is not getting any payments from PCB, the complaint appears to be questionable. TI-Pakistan, therefore, requested the Chairman PCB "to kindly examine the complaint, and confirm whether it is true or false." In case the complaint is true that payment of Rs 2,698,841 has been made by PCB, "please confirm that the WHT has been deducted from your income, in compliance of the Income Tax Ordinance 2001, Section 149."
Copies of the letter have been forwarded for information and appropriate action under the mandate vested to: Secretary to the Prime Minister, for information of the Prime Minister, , Islamabad, Khurshid Shah, Leader of Oposition & Chairman, PAC, National Assembly, Islamabad, Chairman NAB, Islamabad, Federal Tax Ombudsman, Islamabad, and Registrar, Supreme Court Pakistan.
