The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Friday directed the director general of Rangers, the provincial police chief and other officials of law-enforcement agencies (LEAs) to submit their respective reports on whereabouts of four missing men allegedly kept in illegal detention by LEAs and their involvement in crimes.
A division bench headed by Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar gave this direction while hearing two identical petitions seeking court directives to LEAs to trace out the four missing persons. The bench also issued notice to the secretary of the Interior Ministry, the home secretary, the director general of Rangers, the IGP Sindh and other official respondents to file comments on the petition by July 10.
One petition was filed by Sajjad Alam, who submitted that his brother Shahzad Alam, uncle Saeedur Rehman and cousin Khawaja Alam were taken away by LEAs personnel from their houses in Mauripur, a neighbourhood of the city, on June 26. The petitioner alleged that LEAs men were demanding bribe of Rs 2 million for their release. He said that they had threatened that if he failed to arrange the amount and fulfil their demand, they would implicate his relatives in heinous crimes. He requested the court to direct LEAs personnel to produce captives before the court and order action against them for holding innocent citizens for ransom.
Another woman petitioner, Shamim Jehan, submitted in her petition that her son Muhammad Qasim Ali Khan left home on May 16 to perform his duty but did not return home. She said that he was missing since then and apprehended that her son was detained by LEAs. She pleaded the court to direct police to trace out her son.
