The Department of Irrigation officials with the help of police demolished several shops cabins established on bank of canal near board bazaar, under the joint anti-encroachment drive here on Sunday.
The department has prior issued notice to shopkeepers, to vacate area, wherein they have established shops and cabins illegal, but they had failed to comply with the order, then action was taken against them, says an official. He added the Department with help of police, carried out operation, and demolished more than 1,000 shops and cabins, along side board canal.
Shopkeepers strongly protested against the anti-encroachment drive. The official said the water flow has been affected due to encroachment on the canal. They chanted against government and the department of irrigation. The shopkeepers viewed they took much to establish their business there, and the decision was tantamount to snatch morsel from a number of families, they added. They also demanded to provide them alternative location and re-establish their business there. Later, officials of department and police vacated all shops and cabins, and demolished.
