A five-member Parliamentary delegation from Pakistan led by Speaker National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, currently on an official visit to the United Kingdom, held several meetings with the British side in London. The other members of the delegation are from the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of the Parliament and include MNAs Mehmood Khan Achakzai, Raja Javed Ikhlas, Dr Darshan and Dr Arif Alvi.
The delegation attended a briefing on Westminster system at the Parliament House where they were briefed about the functions and conduct of business of the House of Commons and the House of Lords. The two sides exchanged in detail views on the Parliamentary practices in their respective countries, according to a message received here on Tuesday from Pakistan's High Commission.
The delegation also viewed proceedings of the UK's Public Accounts Committee at the House of the Parliament. Later, they held a meeting with Rt Hon Margaret Hodge MP, Chair Public Accounts Committee. The delegation was briefed about the structure, jurisdiction and functions of the PAC. Speaker Ayaz Sadiq apprised the British side about the working and achievements of the PAC of the Parliament of Pakistan.
Mehmood Khan Achakzai laid emphasis on the enhanced role of the UK for strengthening democracy in the Commonwealth countries, especially in Pakistan. It was noted that such Parliamentary exchanges could significantly increase mutual understanding between the two countries. It may be noted that as a part of Parliamentary diplomacy, Pakistan and UK frequently exchange such delegations. Acting High Commissioner Mohammad Imran Mirza accompanied the delegation during the meetings.
