A US private firm has expressed interest in treatment and disposal of the solid waste of the city. A four-member delegation of American Princeton Environmental Group Inc called on Administrator Karachi Rauf Akhter Farooqui to discuss the solid water management of Karachi.
The group, which has huge experience of working in the field of solid waste management in many big cities of the world, is nowadays reviewing the solid waste disposal and generating electricity from waste in Karachi. The delegation led by its President Peter Tien gave a briefing to Administrator Karachi regarding the project. On the occasion, Administrator Karachi said district municipal corporations were responsible for disposal of garbage in the city; however, KMC would support and every measure which was aimed at keeping the city clean and providing basic facilities to citizens. Private sector will be provided with all possible assistance for the betterment of city's solid waste management system.
He said that Karachi, the 6th biggest city of the world with about 25million population, offered a huge market for investment. The city generates more than 15 thousand tons of garbage and waste daily, however due to insufficient resources all of this was not being disposed in landfill sites and this garbage was left in the drains, empty plots and dumping yards. Cleaning Karachi without having co-operation and co-ordination of private sector was a big challenge, he added.
