Senate Standing Committee on Cabinet Secretariat on Tuesday directed the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to propose proper security measures for the new Islamabad airport and implement strict laws before the construction in nearby housing societies. The committee meeting was chaired by Chairperson Senator Kalsoom here at Parliament House.
The committee said all departments including Civil Aviation Authority, Rawalpindi Development Authority and Capital Development Authority (CDA) should follow the rules and regulations and ensure those measures which were recognised internationally for the protection of airports.
CDA Member Waseem Ahmed Khan informed the committee that half area of new Islamabad airport is located in Rawalpindi and other half in Attock district. The Commissioner Rawalpindi Zahid Saeed said that no laws were present for issuing the No Objection Certificate to housing societies near the new airport Islamabad.
He said around the new Islamabad airport 12 housing societies were given NOCs and their distance is four to six kilometres adding that five societies were under the RDA and seven under Attock Tehsil Municipal Administration. The committee member Senator Kamil Ali Agha said it is responsibility of all related institutions to sit together for national interest and propose solid measures for security of new airport Islamabad and committee will work for legislation.
The committee chairperson Senator Parveen Kalsoom said after the incident of Karachi and Peshawar it is important to take those measures which were needed for the protection of airports. She said committee members would visit Park enclave, Bahria enclave and new airport Islamabad on Wednesday with media and propose further suggestions for the protection of airport. CAA Additional Secretary Amjad Toor assured the committee that under the direction of committee the opinion of experts would be gathered and report would be presented before the committee for further actions to protect the new airport from the construction of housing societies. The committee meeting was attended by Senators Kamil Ali Agha, Mushahid Ullah Khan, Hasil Khan Bangash and Dr Saeeda Iqbal.
