According to media reports, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has approved the appointment of Foreign Service career officer Syed Ibne Abbas as Pakistan's new High Commissioner to the United Kingdom. Abbas would be the first Foreign Service officer to be Pakistan's envoy to London in 15 years. The position was previously held by political appointees.
Yes, please, enough is enough. An ambassador is an official envoy who represents a state. One always needs training or a particular background to become an ambassador. Our subsequent governments have been dishing out ambassadorial posts to people whose qualifications for such highly important jobs have been found to be questionable. The present government, therefore, does deserve commendation for taking a bold step towards ending this disgraceful practice.
