President of Multan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI), Khawaja Muhammad Usman has urged upon Minister for Water and Power Abid Sher Ali to take steps to put an end the unannounced loadshedding. During two-day visit to Multan, Abid Sher Ali assured him that government is already taking steps to alleviate the miseries of the commercial, industrial and domestic consumers.
Commenting on Abid Sher Ali' media talk, Khawaja said on one hand masses in general and business community in particular are facing dreadful loadshedding and on the other side repeated increases in tariff are adding fuel to the fire. He said if the same situation will continue then it would be difficult to achieve economic targets set for the ongoing financial year while export-oriented industry would not be able to get full advantage of the opportunity of GSP Plus status by the European Union.
Khawaja urged the government to ensure early completion of water and hydropower projects on war footing as energy shortage is not only hampering the industrial production but is also a serious threat for economic growth. He said business community hails the Nawaz Sharif government's initiatives for power sector announced in the budget 2014-15 but desired results could be achieved only if all energy projects will be completed without any delay.
He said that early completion of hydropower projects would not only ensure cheap and sufficient electricity but would also reduce water shortage. He further said consumers of the efficient distribution companies with lowest line losses and the highest recovery ratio should be treated fairly.
