The European Union this week awarded licences to import 18,160 tonnes of Ukrainian wheat under a duty-free quota created this year as part of a trade deal between the EU and Kiev, official data showed on Thursday. The EU has now awarded just over 145,000 tonnes of Ukrainian wheat under the quota that was opened in April and allows for 950,000 tonnes of Ukrainian wheat to be imported until October 31.
The 28-country bloc awarded 1,875 tonnes of Ukrainian maize imports this week in its second award so far under the maize quota that allows for up to 400,000 tonnes of Ukrainian maize until October 31. Demand for the maize quota could increase after the EU on Wednesday re-introduced a tariff on non-quota maize imports, ending a period of zero maize tariffs dating back to August 2010.
