The Punjab-based textile industry is looking hopefully towards the government for resolution of energy supply issue soon after Eid. Especially, the SNGPL has notified an increase in gas supply to the captive power plants from six hours a day to eight hours a day from Eid onwards. It is a bit respite for the energy-starved textile industry in Punjab.
The Punjab-based textile millers have further expressed the hope that the Ministry of Water and Power will also reduce electricity load shedding from 10 hours a day to 8 hours a day from Eid onwards. Accordingly, they said, 8 hours gas supply coupled with 16 hours a day electricity supply will enable the industry to continue its operations 24/7.
At present, the Ministry of Water and Power is observing 10 hours a day electricity load shedding, which is ending up on a mismatch in gas and electricity supply. Resultantly, the mills are either operating partially or opting for expensive means of fuel to keep their operations intact. The mills' owners have pointed out and ending to the mismatch in electricity and supply gas is the solution to their energy needs. In simple, they added, the government should ensure equal supply of gas for every hour of electricity load shedding.
Meanwhile, the LESCO had suspended electricity supplies to the textile mills during Juma prayers on account of the Juma-t'ul Wida. The industry is hoping that the government would provide relief of this supply cut in late night electricity supplies to the mills. It may be noted a delegation of APTMA leadership has also called on the Minister of State for Water and Power a day earlier and requested him for relief after Eid. They have returned to the provincial metropolis positively.
