The rigorous campaign launched by Islamabad Traffic Police to spread awareness among motorists about the use of seat belt has started bearing fruit as majority can be seen fastening the belts while driving.
The said campaign was launched some months ago during which sign boards were installed at a number of points in the federal capital cautioning the motorists to fasten seat belts otherwise a fine of Rs 300 will be imposed. Moreover, the traffic police officials strictly monitored the motorists and frequently fined the violators, in contrary to their attitude in past when the same offence was occasionally noticed by them.
"Yes, this is a fact that people are now more aware about the use of seat belt while driving as the ratio of those adhering the law has increased considerably in recent past," said a traffic police official on the condition of not to be named. He said the use of seat belt was for the motorists' safety in case of any road mishap.
It was pertinent to mention that a number of steps were taken by the incumbent government right after its coming into power to spread road awareness among motorists; to control over-speeding, ensure lane discipline and fastening of seat belt were among some of the prominent measures.
"The installation of boards urging the motorists to fasten belts, playing an important role in promoting the culture of fastening seat belts," said Ghulam Raza, a motorist.
