General Secretary, Awami National Party (ANP) and former Information Minister, Mian Iftikhar Hussain said on Thursday that ANP being a political party strongly supports the democratic system and unconstitutional moves to topple the present elected government would be strongly opposed.
"Our support is for democracy in Pakistan and not for an individual," he said while addressing the concluding session of final of football tournament in memory of his slain son Mian Rashid Hussain Shaheed at Nowshera. Speaking on the occasion, he said because of democracy, people had given a clear mandate to the party of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in the last general election and we respected PML-N mandate. He said, "We would protect democracy at all cost".
Despite severe concerns of ANP in KP, his party also accepted the mandate of Pakistan Tahrik-e-Insaf for the sake of democracy and urged leadership of both the parties to focus on resolution of people's problems and show restraint. He urged Imran Khan to exhibit patience because the country cannot afford politics of agitation such as long march and sit-ins etc.
Mian Iftikhar urged Imran Khan to respect democracy and mandate of the people. He said ANP would not support toppling of the elected government through unconstitutional means. God forbid if democracy was harmed, he said, the problems of country would further complicate and will create political uncertainty and chaos.
He urged Imran Khan to wait till next election and if people give him mandate he would become the Prime Minister and ANP would be the first to support it. Iftikhar said promises made by PTI with people in last general election were not fulfilled. He expressed the hope the government and opposition would sit together and take the country out of existing situation and address the national issues with consensus. The ANP would strongly oppose the dissolution of the KP Assembly, he remarked.
