Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has convened a National Security Conference (NSC) to brief the political leadership on the 'Zarb-e-Azb' operation against militants in North Waziristan today (Saturday), arguing that it has nothing to do with prevailing political situation.
When contacted, an official of the Prime Minister's House categorically stated that the meeting convened by the Prime Minister has nothing to do with the political situation arising out of 'independence or revolution march'. "The NSC has been convened to brief the parliamentary leaders of political parties on the operation". Since the operation was launched, no formal briefing was given to the political leaders on it as well as the measures taken by the government for internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).
The official added that Chief of Army Staff and DG ISI would update the meeting on the operation's progress and the overall security situation. Minister of States for Frontier Regions (SAFRON) is likely to inform the meeting about the measures taken to accommodate the IDPs. The Chief Ministers of all the provinces and federal ministers would also attend the meeting.
Sources in the Prime Minister House told Business Recorder that Pakistan people's Party's Syed Khurshid Shah and Senator Raza Rabbani, Muttahida Quomi Movement's (MQM) Farooq Sattar, Pakistan Muslim Leagur (PML-F) Pir Pagro, Pakhtunkhwa Awami Milli Party chief Mehmood Khan Achakzai, Awami National Party Chief Asfandyar Wali Khan, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam chief Maulana fazlur Rehman and the Amir of Jamiat Ahle Hadith Prof Saajid Mir have confirmed their participation in the meeting. The government has also invited Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf to the meeting; however, Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhaw Pervez Khattak will attend the meeting as chief executive of provincial government which PTI as a party has decided against attending it.
