Modest trading activity was seen on the cotton market on Monday amid persisting political agitation caused by demand of removal of Nawaz Sharif's government, dealers said. The official spot rate was higher by Rs 50 to Rs 5300, they added. In ready session, around 10,000 bales of cotton changed hands between Rs 5300-5500, they said. Prices of seed cotton in Sindh were up by Rs 50 to Rs 2500-2550 and in Punjab prices adopted the same pattern, rising by Rs 100 to Rs 2600-2650, they said.
Prices were firm due to tight supply and good demand, dealers said. Cotton analyst, Naseem Usman said that phutti supply disrupted by non-availability of transportation following the agitation by supporters of political parties. The ginners have good opportunity, so they sold their stuff to mills as much as they can, he added.
Other analysts said that entire system on both political and economic front was disturbed due to Azadi March on the 14 August, traders said. Traders are looking some confused as Pakistan Awami Tehrik (PAT) Chief Tahir-ul-Qadri announced on Sunday that his supporters would join opposition politician Imran Khan's protest on Thursday. Reports appeared that leaders of PAT and Pakistan Tahrik-e-Insaf called for the government to resign and Qadri has promised to bring it down by the end of the month.
The following deals reported: in Sindh, nearly 1200 bales of cotton from Hyderabad at Rs 5300, 1600 bales from Mirpurkhas at Rs 5300-5350, 2000 bales from Sanghare at Rs 5300-5350, 1600 bales from Shahdadpur at Rs 5300-5375, 1400 bales from Tando Adam at Rs 5300-5400, in Punjab, 400 bales of cotton from Gaggo Mandi at Rs 5400-5500, 600 bales from Haroonabad at Rs 5450-5500, 800 bales from Burewala at Rs 5450-5500 and 600 more bales from Chichawatni at Rs 5450-5500, they said.
