Parliamentary Committee on Electoral Reforms issued rules and procedures of the panel on Wednesday with a binding that it shall present its report to the Parliament within three months from the date of notification of the committee. It has also been decided that meetings shall be held in camera unless otherwise decided by the committee.
"The proceedings and any information tendered before the committee shall be treated as secret unless the committee, in the public interest, decides otherwise," the committee further agrees. The scope of the work of the committee includes evaluation the shortcomings of the previous elections and making recommendations for electoral reforms to ensure that elections are held in a free, fair and transparent manner.
It will also draft legislation or constitutional amendments if required and recommend ways and means to improve the electoral system including the adoption of the latest technology available for holding elections. A member may resign from the membership of the committee by writing under his hand addressed to the Speaker National Assembly. The Speaker may replace any member on the request of the leader of parliamentary party concerned. The committee may invite or summon to appear before the committee any member of parliament, experts in electoral matters, civil society organisation, lawyers or any other person as decided by the committee.
