Heather Knight starred with both bat and ball as England won a rain-affected first women's one-day international against India by 42 runs under the Duckworth/Lewis method at Scarborough on Thursday. Knight took three for 28 to restrict the tourists, victorious in the recent one-off Test between the two teams, to 193 for eight from 47 overs before her fifty at the top of the order put England well on course to chase down a target of 195.
Rain saw that total reduced but a fresh downpour after 30.1 over saw the match called off after 30.1 overs, with England well ahead of their D/L total of 112 at 153 for three. England new-ball bowler Anya Shrubsole took two early wickets, after skipper Charlotte Edwards won the toss to reduce India to 13 for two before opener Smriti Mandhana got the tourists back on track with a well-made 74. India then suffered two run-outs before Knight collected a couple of late wickets.
Knight and Edwards dominated India's bowlers in an opening stand of 110. Edwards completed a 56-ball half-century before being bowled by Ekta Bisht for 57, while Knight fell to a good catch in the deep for 53 by Vellaswamy Vanitha as she tried to slog-sweep Shikha Pandey. England, however, remained well ahead of the required run-rate until rain finally ended the match.
