Directorate General of Agriculture (Extension and Applied Research) Punjab has established a 'flood monitoring cell' in its office after an advisory from Pak Meteorological Department for appropriate action. This cell will work from 08:00am to 08:00pm without any holiday till further orders, said a notification issued by the Director General Dr Muhammad Anjum Ali here on Friday.
The notification said officers will work in this cell to monitor flood activities in the rivers and streams with respect to crop inundations and also to convey Pak met Advisories to the districts especially in Lahore, Gujranwala and Faisalabad divisions.
Meanwhile Punjab Water Council representative Chaudhry Hamid Malhi and Farmers Associates of Pakistan (FAP) Director Rabia Sultan while talking to Business Recorder expressed the fear that water being released by India in rivers without prior notice to Pakistan may cause heavy damage to the agricultural sector in coming days. They said that continuous rains may cause damage to sugar cane, maize, fodder and vegetables. Hamid Malhi said not only water released in rivers but also some nullahs which come to Pakistan in Narowal, Sialkot and Gujrat districts may cause heavy damages to the standing crops.
