Senator Taj Haider has said that Sindh province will experience high level floods because of consecutive spell of rain in Azad Kashmir and Punjab province. He said this while speaking to a seminar on Policy Dialogue on Right of Food Debate in Sindh Pakistan - Global Context and Local Commitments held here at Local Hotel on Sunday and organised by SAFWCO.
"About one million cusecs water is expected to be passed from Kotri Bridge and passing such huge quantity of water through the bridge is very difficult," he said. The quantity of water may also rise because there are floods of approximately 500,000 cusecs water at Jhelum River and water of quantity at Jhelum would rise further because it is still raining there, he said.
Aside from this, there is another quantity of water which is on way to be accumulated at Jhelum and ultimately released into Indus River, he said. The Sindh government has to take precautionary measures to avert the possibilities of floods due to prevailing situation, Haider said.
"If any one says that there is no threat of flood to the province, he does not know the reality of situation," he said while rejecting such perception. Criticising the PML-N-led government, he said that Sindh province received around Rs 300 billion less in the current budget. During the budget session, 38 senators were not allowed to participate in the session, he said.
The senator said that poverty is at an extreme level in rural areas of the province which could be eliminated by bringing reforms in Agriculture sector. New programme would be launched in Thar to utilise saline water for Agriculture sector there, he said.
Speaking on the occasion, Senator Moula Bux Chandio said that there was a dire need of planning in every department of Sindh government which could promote the lives of people there. Leaders of Freedom and Revolution marches are taking rest at palace while leaving their workers at D-Chowk but the leaders of PPP did not do it, he said.
Professor of Sindh University, Dr Pervaiz Pathan said, "Despite of consecutive efforts for the last 67 years, we could not have brought better results in agriculture sector. We have to identify that either poverty was causing food security in the province."
Professor of Sindh Agriculture University Tando Jam, Muhammad Ismail Kumbhar said that there is a shortage of food and water. There is a need of policy on agriculture and food to eliminate the issue of food security in the province, he added.
