Vice Chancellor Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Medical University (SZAM), Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), Professor Javed Akram on Tuesday refuted the charges of hiding 17 dead bodies of protesters of sit-ins of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT). Addressing a press conference, the VC SZAB medical university said that the leadership of PTI and PAT should avoid making such charges on prestigious medical institution of the country.
He said that the hospital management has complete medical record of injured and deceased persons of sit-ins and offered that the management is ready to face any judicial or media commission to prove that such charges are baseless and without any fact. He apprised that the total number of injured who came to PIMS were 354, out of which 205 were male, 29 female, five children and 112 policemen. He added the total number of dead bodies at PIMS were three.
He said a 42-year old Naveed Razzaq brought dead to PIMS. He added 24 years Rafi Ullah brought the hospital with head injury by high velocity of fire arm and the object has been sent for ballistic analysis, he added. The VC said that 30 years old Gulfam Adil remained admitted in the hospital with penetrating injury of the abdomen and that no object was retrieved.
He said that the leadership of sit-ins were defaming the noble profession of medical which will have negative impacts on society as people will stop believing on such health institutions and medical practitioners. He requested the leadership of PAT and PTI to avoid politicising this issue as many patients following their wrong impression will stop visiting hospitals and getting medical advise from medical practitioners.
Professor Javed Akram said that the hospital has prepared PC-1 for purchase of deep-freezers for placing dead-bodies however till now PIMS has only few deep-freezers with limited capacity of placing six dead-bodies. He also dispelled this impression that PIMS doctors had avoided to remove bullets from injured protesters and clarified that not the hospital management but the hospital's senior surgeons had decided to stop removing bullets from some injured persons following the set medical procedures. He added in some cases in which it was necessary to remove bullets while in many cases there was no need of removing bullets to avoid further complications and the decision was only taken by surgeons to save their lives, he added.
