There is a highly positive development in the midst of political impasse in the country. According to reports, Pakistan People's Party (PPP) has asked Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) to constitute a permanent Parliamentary Committee on National Security with a view to thoroughly deliberating national security and foreign policy issues with all stakeholders, including the military.
The proposal has been mooted by Senator Raza Rabbani on the floor of the Parliament during its joint session. Rabbani pointed out that the previous government of PPP had constituted a Parliamentary Committee on National Security, which discussed the issues with stakeholders relating to national security including Nato supply, air strikes from Afghanistan side and foreign policy.
According to him, the committee can play a pivotal role towards arranging dialogues among the institutions and becoming a collective voice of all the stakeholders. No doubt, his is a saner voice. The proposal that he has mooted needs serious consideration. It is therefore imperative that parliamentarians continue to work together if their objective is the survival of the system.
