The weekly Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI) inflation surged by 6.92 percent during the week ended on September 25, 2014, registering an increase in prices of some essential commodities. The provisional data, released by Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, shows that the SPI for the week under review was recorded at 217.74 points against 203.65 points over the same period of last year. However, SPI inflation increased by 0.13 percent this week as compared to the previous week, from 217.46 points to 217.74points.
The weekly SPI has been computed with base 2007-2008=100, covering 17 urban centers and 53 essential items for all income groups. The SPI for the lowest income group up to Rs 8,000 registered an increase of 5.33 percent during the week under review as compared to the same period last year.
During the week, average prices of 15 items registered increase, while that of 11 registered a decrease. The prices of 27essential items remained unchanged during the week under review. Fifteen items which recorded increase in average prices include: tomatoes, pulse gram, red chilly powder, gur, vegetable ghee loose, cigarettes k-2, salt powder loose Lahori, pulse mash washed, wheat flour bag, garlic, powdered milk, beef, rice basmati, wheat and potatoes.
The 11 essential items which registered decrease in prices during the week under review included bananas, rice irri-6 (Punjab/Sindh), chicken farm, pulse masoor washed, sugar, onions, pulse moong washed, LPG cylinder 11kg, mustard oil, vegetable ghee, tin and eggs. Price of 27 essential items remain unchanged during the week under review which includes: bread plain, mutton, milk fresh, curd, cooking oil tin, tea Lipton yellow label, cooked beef plate, cooked daal plate, tea prepared, long cloth, shirting, lawn printed, georgette, gents sandal Bata, gents chappal spng bata, ladies sandal Bata, electricity charges, gas charges, kerosene oil, firewood whole, energy saver bulb 14w, washing soap 200-250 g, match box, petrol, hi speed diesel (HSD), telephone local call charges and soap Lifebuoy.
