Service to minorities & human rights: Asma conferred French Legion of Honour award
Ambassador of France to Pakistan Philippe Thiébaud on Tuesday conferred the prestigious French award "Officier de la Légion d'Honneur" [Officer of the Legion of Honour] on renowned human rights activist and lawyer Asma Jahangir.
The award was conferred on her at a reception organized at the residence of the French Ambassador on recognition of her services for human rights and her voice for the rights of minority groups in the country. Diplomats, representatives of civil society and media persons attended the reception.
"You really deserved this honour in recognition of your services for the protection of human rights and minorities' rights and I'm pleased to confer this award on you on behalf of the French government," said Ambassador Thiébaud, while conferring the award on Asma Jahangir.
Speaking on the occasion, Asma Jahangir thanked the ambassador and the government of France for awarding her with the prestigious French award. "This award is not only for me but for all who are working with me in this struggle," she said. Talking about the human rights status in Pakistan, she said though there was some improvement yet it needed more work to do. "As far the award is concerned, I think I can return by serving not only the people of Pakistan but the humanity," she added.
