Apropos "LB polls: SC issues notices to AGs of Punjab, Sindh, KPK" carried by Business Recorder yesterday, it is heartening to note that Supreme Court has issued notices to Advocates General Punjab, Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK), directing them to submit their replies about the preparations of local bodies elections in their respective provinces.
A three-member bench headed by the CJP reportedly expressed annoyance on not holding LB polls in KPK despite the fact that delimitation has been carried out in the province recently.
The AG KPK, accordingly, apprised the court that the apex court in its orders had authorised the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to make new electoral boundaries that caused a delay in elections; upon which, Justice Mulk said that the court was not rightly interpreted as its judgement was about Punjab and Sindh; it was not about KPK.
Local governance is a broader concept and is defined as the formulation and execution of collective action at the local level. The protracted absence of local governments is therefore a sardonic comment on the status of democracy in the country. How ironic it is that the recently concluded joint sitting of parliament while reiterating its commitment to rule of law and constitutionalism did not express its resolve towards the need of local government which means the administration of the local affairs of a city, town, or other districts by its inhabitants.
