The prices of vegetables have reduced in the city's retail markets with the improvement in supplies from upcountry. Tomato prices, which had touched Rs 240 per kg during Eid-ul-Azha holidays, tumbled down to Rs 60 per kg, while the price of small size tomatoes reduced to Rs 40 per kg. After holidays, fresh crop was reaching the city's markets, which had largely helped stabilise its prices, retailers said.
They said that the prices of fruit and vegetables might go down further in coming days due to better supply and low demand. The wholesale market is regarded as the most bustling vegetable market of the country, where some 500 to 600 trucks arrive daily from interior Sindh, Punjab and Balochistan.
The areas from where Karachi receives its vegetable and fruit supply are Badin, Gadap, Thatta, Thana Bola Khan, Hala, Hyderabad, Tando Allayar, Nasrpur and other adjoining areas besides Punjab, and Balochistan. Likewise, onion is available at Rs 40 to Rs 45 per kg, garlic Rs 116 to 120, ginger Rs 320 per kg, lady finger Rs 60 per kg and palak is being sold at Rs 40 per kg. However, there is no respite in the price of potato, as it is still available at Rs 60 per kg.
