Apropos editorial 'The Multan battle' carried by the newspaper on Saturday, one must not lose sight of the fact that although senior politician is down because of his defeat in the NA-149 Multan constituency he is not out.
The newspaper has made a valid point that "this election was about things far bigger than victory or defeat of individual candidates. The PTI had to prove it enjoyed popular support in its ongoing protest sit-in questioning Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's mandate on the basis of alleged vote rigging in the last national elections. The ruling party, by backing Hashmi, needed to disprove the PTI. Hashmi had his own reputation to save after having levelled serious charges against his former party Chairman Imran Khan of involvement in a conspiracy to oust the government through extra-constitutional means."
No doubt, the results of Multan by-poll have in a way caused some damage to a highly respected Hashmi's reputation PTI chief Imran Khan has plausibly argued that Hashmi's defeat is a lesson for both Nawaz Sharif and Asif Zardari.
