Chairman Islamic Ideology Council (IIC) Maulana Muhammad Khan Sherani on Tuesday said that child marriage is permissible. Talking to media persons after an IIC session, Sherani said marriage in childhood is permissible as long as it is not performed under forbidden traditions such as Wani, Sawara, etc, but the consummation is not allowed until the married girl reaches the age of 18. He also said annulling marriage for the reasons of second marriage must be avoided.
He said that husband's imprisonment for seven years should also not be the basis for annulment of marriage "because an individual convicted of a crime is worthy of mercy". Maulana Sherani said that a wife has the right to annulment of marriage only if her husband fails to fulfil his marital responsibilities and treats her with cruelty.
The IIC met here for the 196th time under the chairmanship of Maulana Sherani. The session discussed subjects like Dissolution of Muslim Marriages Act 1939, Protection of Pakistan Ordinance, National Security Policy, code of conduct to prevent sectarian violence and sex education content in the school curriculums.
