Speakers on Tuesday stressed upon the legal fraternity to enhance knowledge through 'Continuing Legal Education' (CLE) for quality legal dispensation to strengthen administration of justice in the country. Addressing to the participants of National Conference on Continuing Legal Education here at a hotel, former Chief Justice of Pakistan Tassaduq Hussain Jillani dubbed himself a product of continuing legal education.
The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) hosted the conference in collaboration with Continuing Legal Education Institute of Pakistan (CLEIP) and sponsorship of the United States' Department of Commerce, Commercial Law Development Program (CLDP). According to Facebook page of the CLEIP other sponsors of the event includes; Anti-Counterfeit and Infringement Forum (ACIF), Overseas Investors Chambers of Commerce and Industry (OICCI), USAID, the US Embassy Islamabad, the Pakistan Institute of Labour Education & Research (PILER), and the Research Society of International Law (RSIL).
President CLEIP Dr Tariq Hassan suggested the legal fraternity to make collective effort for the purpose through establishing a national co-ordination committee to formulate a continuing legal education policy in the country. He said that the code of professional responsibility requires a lawyer's proficiency in his job, adding that continuing legal education purpose is to sharpen the skills of licensed lawyers and judges.
During the day long conference, four sessions were held on emerging trends in private law, current status of legal education, emerging trends in public law and continuing legal education in Pakistan. Justice Jillani participated in the opening and concluding sessions whereas the SCBA president Kamran Murtaza, United States Federal Court Justice John. R. Tunheim, speakers from United Kingdom, around 500 law students and members of various Bar Councils of the country participated in the Conference.
On the conclusion of the Conference, the participants endorsed resolution concept of the CLE for the purpose of promoting the cannons of the professional conduct of lawyers. Through the resolution Pakistan Bar Council, Provincial Bar Councils, District and Tehsil Bar association were requested to consider adopting the CLE concept.
The Federal Judicial Academy was requested to facilitate training of lawyers and judges, law colleges and legal institutions were also asked to facilitate post graduate training of lawyers. The legislatures, government and local authorities were requested to facilitate the implementation of the CLE in their respective domain. Through the resolution the CLEIP was requested to act as a co-ordinator for the promotion and proliferation of the CLE in Pakistan.
