Through devotion and determination Rabia Zuberi had achieved both aims of her life - to excel in art and to promote art education, in the form of Karachi School of Arts. The KSA has remarkable contributions in promoting art with a vision to encourage new talent and to expose the art students to the work of senior artists of the country and is still continuing. Here art flourished, producing a galaxy of artists in Pakistan.
KSA has made her presence felt in the art education circle soon after its inception in 1964. Founded by Rabia Zuberi, a well known sculptor, KSA is first private art institution of the country and also the first art centre of its kind in Karachi. Now it is also affiliated with Karachi University.
Since its inception three generations of KSA students used their talent and enterprise to enrich art and culture at home and abroad. Sculptures, paintings and drawings of its artists adore different galleries at home and abroad and in private collection.
As a pioneer in promoting art in the region KSA has produced many eminent artists during its fifty years of imparting art education. Mashkoor Raza, Lubna Agha, Abdul Hayee, Ghalib Baqar, Zaheen Ahmed, A Q Arif, Anjum Ayaz and Danish Raza are some of the celebrated artists in the contemporary art scenario in Pakistan who belongs to KSA.
On 50 years of Karachi School of Arts golden jubilee celebrations VM Art Gallery presents a group show of those renowned artists who became famous and made KSA famous through their art.
The exhibition titled "Roll Call II" has significant importance as it features the art creations of the KSA former students who passed out in 50 years and now represent society through their artworks.
These students entered the creative fields after completed their curriculum trainings and spread what they gained from their teachers and give back something positive to the society.
The show provides an opportunity to the artists to share their inspirations and innovative ideas along with modern vision. The problems have been highlighted in the artworks produced by the talented artists exploring relatively new vistas for coming generation by creating their own metaphors.
Every artwork deals with different subject portrayed by sensitive drawings and colours using their freedom of expression through abstract ideas. The artworks are diverse other than stereotype art scenes exploring the medium by means of lines, texture and colour.
Capturing human relationships through symbolic expressions and characterize a society where various factors create imbalance in the society. Some works reflect the sense of isolation and anger while others show hope and love.
The artworks were based on number of social, political, and economic issues that have been prevailed rapidly in our society for the last many years. At the event every painting has its own voice and identity showing artists experience and skills.
Each of the artwork contains fine detail and contours. Images and notions within spaces attract attention towards themselves.
The artworks made by using the process of printmaking are created with an element of originality. Every print is a dialogue between the viewer and the creative artist and builds an unseen bond through symbols enabling the artist to communicate to the outer world through their creations thus an exciting interactive artwork born.
I have known and talked to senior artists who have graduated from KSA and it is quite interesting that each of them praises Rabia Zuberi and finds her very helpful specially if any of the student experience financial constraints. She awarded scholarships to students who were without any means except their talent. The school has a number of excellent teachers and hard working students with clear vision. They are desirous of achieving success in their fields and many of them achieved their goals.
The exhibition showcased the skills of artist in paintings, sculptures and prints including Abdul Hayee, Mashkoor Raza, Lubna Agha, Athar Jamal, Tariq Jawaid, Anjum Ayaz, Zaheen Ahmed, Ghalib Baqar, A Q Arif, G N Qazi, Danish Raza, Saqib Mughal, Shazly Khan, Salman Farooqi, Musarrat Arif and many others.
The exhibition is truly a mix of sentimental statements, emotions recorded by the artists showing their command and skills on the medium they use to express themselves.
