Yaum-e-Shahadat (the day of martyrdom) of Islam's second Caliph Hazrat Umar Farooq (Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anhu) was observed with religious fervour in the provincial capital and other cities of Punjab on Sunday. Various religious and literary bodies organized programmes to highlight the achievements and personality of the second Muslim Caliph who established a truly welfare Islamic state.
He was the role model for the rulers of the world and the most powerful and influential Muslim Caliph in history. He succeeded the first Caliph of Islam Hazrat Abu Bakar (Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anhu) at the most crucial period of the Islamic history.
Under Hazrat Umar (RA) the Islamic empire expanded to Persian and Roman empires in less than two years. It was he who set aside the Christian ban on Jews and allowed Jews into Jerusalem and to worship. The great Caliph of Islam had embraced martyrdom on 1st Muharram-ul-Haram.
In Lahore, a number of religious organisations arranged seminars, Majalis and rallies to highlight the personality and achievements of Syedena Hazrat Umar Farooq (RA), the Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat held out a procession from the Data Darbar which was terminated in front of the Lahore Press Club after passing through various streets of the city. In their speeches, Ulema and Mashaikh demanded that Ist of Muharram be declared a public holiday. The Sunni Tehreek also took out a procession to mark the day and pay tributes to the second Caliph of Islam.
