Jamaat-i-Islami Chief Sirajul Haq has asked the government to show large-heartedness and implement the decisions arrived at with the opposition Jirga during the PTI-PAT sit-ins. He was speaking at a joint press conference with PTI Vice-Chairman, Shah Mehmood Qureshi, following a meeting with a PTI delegation. The delegation included Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Pervez Khattak and PTI Punjab chief Ejaz Chaudhry.
Siraj said that so far, neither any draft regarding the electoral reforms had been received from the government nor the JI had been informed of any progress on this score. He said if the government delayed the setting up of the Judicial Commission and the reconstitution of the Election Commission in spite of its announcement in this regard, the next elections would also be controversial.
He said the rulers should not be under the misconception that the threat to the government had been over after Dr Tahirul Qadri's lifting of the sit-in. He said if the government did not honour its commitment, the crisis would deepen. He further said that so far, the PTI's attitude had been positive and its leaders were still willing to resume talks. Therefore, it had become imperative for the government to demonstrate a positive attitude and restart the talks for putting the things in order.
The JI chief said that if electoral reforms were not carried out, it would become difficult to bring the voters to the polling stations in future, as the general public had lost trust in the prevailing election system. Earlier, Shah Mehmood Qureshi told newsmen that the PTI-JI coalition in KP had been a good experience and the PTI delegation had called on the JI chief to find out ways and means for improving the working relationship between the two parties.
