With a view to raising awareness among people about hepatitis, the Punjab Health department is observing "Hepatitis Week" from Tuesday in the province. During the week, besides holding of seminars at all districts and tehsil headquarters hospitals and health centres, technical workshops and other functions are also being arranged to create awareness.
It may be noted that viral hepatitis - a group of infectious diseases known as Hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E - affects hundreds of millions of people world-wide, causing acute and chronic liver disease and killing close to 1.4 million people every year. But hepatitis remains largely ignored or unknown.
Advisor to Chief Minister on Health Kh Salman Rafique said that Hepatitis B and C is spreading in the country speedily. However, there is a need of creating public awareness about elimination of this disease and spreading the principle of "prevention is better than cure" in the society. According to him, the government is paying special attention to eliminate quackery for controlling hepatitis. He said that disposal of hospital waste in a proper manner is essential and administrative doctors of government hospitals will have to realise their responsibility in this regard.
