Stroke has been and continues to be a widespread disease world-wide, afflicting over 15 million people each year. Of those 15 million, almost six million die and a further five million are left permanently disabled. In Pakistan, at least 1000 persons are having strokes, of which 400 die daily due to strokes and its complications.
This was stated by renowned neurologist and President of Pakistan Society of Neurology Dr Muhammad Wasey Shakir while speaking at a seminar held in connection with World Stroke Day at Karachi Press Club (KPC) on Tuesday. The seminar was arranged by KPC health committee in collaboration with Pakistan Stroke Society and a local pharmaceutical company.
World Stroke Day will be observed today (29 October) all over the world and experts would highlight the dangers of stroke, factors causing the disease and healthy practices for people to prevent themselves from the paralysing disease. At the health screening camp, working journalists and their family members were provided facilities of free health screening. Blood pressure, blood sugar level and cholesterol were checked by the experts on the occasion.
Dr Wasey said women in Pakistan were more at the risk of having strokes as compared to men and said there was a need to aware of women of the deadly disease and ways and practices to prevent themselves from the paralyzing disease. He said unhealthy lifestyle, lack of regular exercise, excessive intake of table salt and diabetes were some of the major causes of stroke and added that smoking in men, especially was another reason that causes heart problem as well as stroke. "People should adopt the practice of doing daily exercise, smokers should quit smoking and other oral use of tobacco, reduce intake of sodium chloride or table salt to prevent themselves from getting stroke, he maintained.-PR
