Pakistan Industrial and Traders Associations Front (PIAF) has sought the help of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif against repeated increases in the electricity tariff. PIAF Chairman Malik Tahir Javed in a statement on Wednesday feared that any further hike in electricity prices was bound to push the crisis-hit industrial sector to the wall.
How the Pakistani merchandise would be able win buyers in the international market when their prices would be higher than the same quality goods of other countries, he questioned. He said instead controlling line losses and making arrangements to stop electricity thefts, the authorities were busy in making proposals for further increase in electricity prices.
He suggested to the government to minimise the administrative cost of the power generation agency that is an undue burden on the consumers therefore this should be controlled on emergent basis. PIAF Chairman said they had already conveyed to the government that the country would become a trading hub if appropriate measures to ensure low-cost electricity to the industry are not taken. He also appealed to the government to announce some special package so that the business community could make investment in power sector.
