An anti-terrorism court here on Thursday awarded Shahid Aziz alias Gullu Butt rigorous imprisonment of eleven years and three months. Butt was accused of smashing private vehicles with a club outside Minhajul Quran Secretariat in Model Town when city police were engaged with the supporters of Dr Tahirul Qadri. Wielding a long club, Butt appeared on the scene and started damaging cars.
Not only did the police personnel fail to stop Butt from carrying out his smashing spree, they were lending a helping hand to him. Butt had been giving conflicting statements about his act. Before courts he had been denying the charges of smashing the cars while in several media talks he regretted his act.
Butt was awarded imprisonment of five years under section 7 of Anti Terrorism Act 1997, three months under section 186 of PPC (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions), two years under section 353 of PPC (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), two years under section 427 of PPC (mischief causing damage and smashing vehicles) and two years under section 506 of PPC (punishment for criminal intimidation). The court also imposed a collective fine of Rs140100 on him. "All the sentences shall run concurrently," the presiding judge ordered.
