Post disaster management is always a huge challenge. Disasters like earthquakes, floods, landslides or even in case of road accidents, strike with little or no warning. This specially is true for under developed and developing nations, where adequate warning system, disaster shelters and protective works are not available in abundance.
Operating in a post disaster scenario therefore is a challenge that entire nation has to fight and stand up to. To develop and equip a potent force that has the capability and flexibility to respond to varying needs of disaster struck areas is therefore a necessity. Pakistan Army by the virtue of its spread, available equipment and resources has been over the years successfully fighting the natural disasters and possesses the ability to restore communication lines and rapidly move the required logistic support to disaster struck areas. The challenges of rescue and emergent rehabilitation are mostly undertaken by Pakistan Army.
Frontier Works Organization (FWO) without doubt is Pakistan Army's most potent arm in a disaster situation, when is comes to restoration of communication lines. FWO's trained and well equipment manpower has the ability to deploy and redeploy its resources in quickest possible timeframe. FWO owing to its operational readiness, resolve and professional ability has never been found wanting in case of a national call for disaster management.
FWO was raised to carve the miracle of Karakoram Highway in most hostile terrain conditions of Karakoram Ranges. FWO since its birth has been fighting the avalanches, rock falls, severe weather and logistic difficulties with courage and fortitude. Heroics of FWO's workforce, in trying conditions of Northern Areas finally translated in to a 729 km road.
