Mobile phone services are likely to be suspended in major cities of the country, including Karachi, on account of Ashura Muharram. The Government of Sindh has written a letter to the federal government, requesting it to suspend cellular services in key cities of the province including Karachi. Sources told that cellular services could be jammed in Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Khairpur and Larkana; however a final decision is still to be made in this regard.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Commissioner (DC) Peshawar has announced the suspension of mobile services in specific areas of the provincial capital. The Home Department of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) said that cellular services will be jammed in sensitive areas such as Dera Ismail Khan, Tank and Hangu. In Islamabad, mobile services will also remain suspended during 9 and 10 Muharram though partially, by placing jammers alongside the route of Ashura procession.
According to the decision taken by Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan in Islamabad Saturday, the service will remained suspended due to security concerns in Islamabad. The decision has been taken in the wake of requests made by provincial governments. Ashura commemorates the death of the Prophet Muhammad's (PBUH) grandson Hazarat Imam Hussain.
