The Special Committee of the Cabinet on power matters received a detailed briefing from a team of auditors about their report on the issue of over-billing. The committee headed by Finance Minister Ishaq Dar met in Islamabad on Saturday. The auditors were assigned some additional tasks by the Finance Minister. Dar also asked them to ascertain in clear and unambiguous terms whether or not advance or overbilling actually occurred.
The Committee also had a detailed review of the implementation of Cabinet's decision regarding adjustment of excess billing. The Finance Minister said in the last 14 months, the government had been able to considerably bring down the subsidy for the power sector and allocated in the FY 2014-15 an amount of Rs 180 billion to subsidise electricity. He said the amount saved had been diverted to development works, especially those related to energy sector. Minister for Water & Power, Khawaja Mohammad Asif, Minister for Commerce, Khurram Dastgir Khan, Minster for Textile Industry, Abbas Khan Afridi and other senior officials attended the meeting.
