Nearly 25,000 police officials will provide security to mourning processions and Majalis on Youm-e-Ashur (Muharram 10) in the metropolis. The IG Police Sindh, Ghulam Haider Jamali, along with Additional IG Karachi Ghulam Qadir Thebo and other senior police officers visited various areas of the city on Monday to review security arrangements for mourning processions and Majalis in the city on Youm-e-Ashur.
The AIG Karachi apprised the IGP Sindh that over 573 Majalis, 45 Waaz and Mahafil will be held and nearly 330 mourning processions, Which, include 225 processions by followers of non-Jafaria schools of thought, will be taken out on Muharram 10 in the city. He said that up to 25,000 police personnel will discharge dutieson Youm-e-Ashur, while additional force will be acquired from CID, SRP, RRF etc. Ghulam Qadir Thebo informed that police commandos and elite force's personnel will be deployed for the security of processions and Majalis at the sensitive places.
The IGP was also informed that besides the monitoring of the sealed shops and unoccupied flats/ plots along the route of the main mourning procession, snipers and police personnel are also deployed on top of the buildings along the route. He was informed that all possible steps are being taken for effective communication between the officers and jawans to be deployed at the head and tail of the main mourning procession for timely action on any instructions from the central command and control centre.
The IGP was apprised that intelligence collection and sharing process along the routes of main mourning processions and at the venue of main Majalis is also being ensured, while bomb disposal squad's teams are actively involved in sweeping, scanning and clearance of the routes and venues. While checking of the participants at the Nishtar Park and Hussainian Iranian Imambargah's main routes is also continuing through walk-through gates and metal detectors.
The IGP Sindh directed that besides police patrolling in sensitive areas, police officers and jawans specially trained and equipped with sophisticated weapons should be deployed along the main procession route. He also called for prompt action over report of any suspicious activity or any unclaimed item in view of possible security threats in this regard.
