Import of low quality wheat by millers: Sindh minister urges Centre to take immediate notice
Sindh Minister for Food and Health Jam Mehtab Hussain Dahar has urged the federal government to take immediate notice of import of low quality wheat from Russia and Ukraine by flour millers. In a statement issued here on Monday, he said that owners of flour mills were making money at the cost of people's health, besides causing losses to government exchequer.
Mehtab said that the importers had purchased 6.5 lac metric tons low quality wheat from Russia and Ukraine at the rate of 260 to 287 dollar per ton in order to get more profit by grinding low quality wheat. He added: "Through this act the millers will get profit of more than 15,000,000 dollars and this will affect the people of Pakistan in general and people of Sindh in particular."
Jam Mehtab said that 18 lac metric tons good quality wheat was lying in government and private sector's godowns. He said that on one hand the millers were minting money while grinding and importing low quality wheat and on the other causing loss to government exchequer. He demanded of the federal government to take immediate notice of the situation.
