Determined to promote need-based vocational skills development, Punjab Skills Development Fund (PSDF) launched third round of one of its largest training schemes, skills for Job 2014-15 singing contracts worth Rs 1.7 billion with 44 training service providers. PSDF has engaged a multitude of training institutes from public and private sector to deliver quality vocational trainings 118 multiple trades.
Under the scheme, Skills for Job 2014-15, more than 24,000 individuals will be trained from the seven districts of Punjab Lahore, Sheikhupura, Faisalabad, Chiniot, Sargodha, Gujranwala, and Narowal. While addressing the ceremony, CEO PSDF Ali Sarfraz said that PSDF has trained more than 55,000 individuals from the 14 districts of Punjab. The current scheme would further contribute in developing employable workforce for the country which would make a great asset for the labour abundant Pakistan.
He further said that the Fund follows a competitive model for the award of contracts which ensures transparency and helps enhancing the quality of training services. He said that due to the informal vocational and technical trainings system prevalent across the country, our manpower remains unable to command better wages in the local as well as international job markets which hinders the prospective economic. Whereas PSDF has launched most of its training schemes after rigorous market research to meticulously gauge the labour market needs which ensure affluent opportunities of income generation for its funded trainees. The particular scheme skills for Job 2014-15 would offer trainings in various innovative trades from construction, hospitality, information technology, automobiles, mechanical, textiles and service sectors.
These formally accredited training courses will capacitate the individuals belonging to lower income backgrounds to get employed in the labour market on improved wages. The scheme is a sequel to the Fund's previous two rounds of scheme, Skills for Job. In the preceding rounds more than 30,000 individuals were trained in numerous vocational trades.
According to the company's spokesperson, a tracer study of a previous round of skills for Job revealed that almost 85 per cent of the trainees found the training helpful for finding new employment opportunities.
It also divulged that 67 per cent of the trainees got involved in income generation activities right after completion of their trainings, which certainly signifies the market relevance and effectiveness of PSDF funded training schemes. PSDF is a section 42 company, established by the Government of the Punjab in collaboration with the Department for International Development (DFID), UK. PSDF funds vocational training organisations for providing vocational and skills training to the populations of fourteen districts of South Punjab - Bahawalpur, Lodhran, Muzaffargarh, Bahawalnagar, Vehari, Khaewal, Rahim Yar Khan, Lahore, Sargodha, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Chiniot, Narowal and Sheikhupura. PSDF future plan include launch of specialised schemes for labour-intensive sectors such as Light Engineering, Footwear, Food Processing, Construction, Garments and Hospitality.
