The Dominican Republic's top court has struck down as unconstitutional an international agreement recognising the Inter-American Court of Human Rights amid a dispute over deportations of Haitians and their Dominican-born descendants. The 10-3 decision Tuesday by the Constitutional Court came after the regional rights court on October 22 denounced the deportations and ordered the government to grant citizenship to those of Haitian descent who were born in the Dominican Republic. The Dominican Republic shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti.
The government of President Danilo Medina rejected the inter-American court's ruling as "extemporaneous, out of date and inopportune."
