The weekly Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI) inflation surged by 0.39 percent during the week ended November 6, 2014, reflecting an increase in prices of some essential commodities. The provisional data, released by Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, shows that the SPI for the week under review was recorded at 214.13 points against 213.30 over the same period of last year.
However, SPI inflation decreased by 0.36 percent this week as compared to the previous week, coming down from 214.90 points to 214.13 points. The weekly SPI has been computed with base 2007-2008=100, covering 17 urban centers and 53 essential items for all income groups. The SPI for the lowest income group up to Rs 8,000 registered an increase of 0.73 percent during the week under review as compared to the same period last year.
During the week, average prices of 9 items registered an increase, while that of 14 registered a decrease. The prices of 30 essential items remained same during the week under review. The 9 essential items which registered increase in prices during the week under review included eggs, chicken live, potatoes, red chilli powder loose, pulse mash washed, garlic, pulse gram washed, mutton and beef.
The 14 items which registered decrease in prices during the week under review included, petrol, kerosene oil, hi speed diesel (HSD), tomatoes, onions, LPG cylinder 11kg, bananas, sugar, gur, rice irri-6 (Punjab/Sindh), vegetable ghee loose, pulse masoor washed, pulse moong, washed and wheat flour bag.
However, prices of 30 items remain unchanged during the week under review included wheat, rice basmati broken, bread plain medium size, milk fresh, curd, powdered milk Nido, mustard oil, cooking oil tin, vegetable ghee tin, salt powder loose Lahori, tea Lipton Yellow Label, cooked beef plate, cooked daal, tea prepared, cigarettes k-2, long cloth, shirting, lawn printed, georgette, gents sandal Bata, gents chappal sponge Bata, ladies sandal Bata, electricity charges, gas charges, firewood, energy saver 14 watt, washing soap 200-250 g, match box, telephone local call charges and soap Lifebuoy.
