Pakistan Industrial and Traders Associations Front (PIAF) has demanded of the government to avoid any increase in the gas tariff as it would prove last nail in the coffin. PIAF Chairman Malik Tahir Javed in a statement on Friday said that any increase in gas prices would be a sheer injustice with the entire industrial sector that had already been facing multiple internal and external challenges and fighting for its survival.
At a time when the country was facing acute electricity and gas shortage, and Pakistani merchandise were losing their due share in the international market, the increase in the gas prices would be adding fuel to fire and bound to increase input cost further, he added.
Malik Tahir Javed said the potential foreign investors were already showing reluctance to put their money in any new venture in Pakistan due to law and order situation and in the wake of huge hike in gas prices; they could select other regional market as their investment place. It would be better if exploration of new reserves is expedited. He said that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif should give a serious thought to this issue that was likely to push the export-oriented sector to the wall.
