Nokia is challenging Google in the navigation business, offering its Here Maps app for free in a version that has been adapted to the Android operating system. The Here Maps app has so far been available as a "beta" or test version and can be downloaded at no cost from the Here product site.
A particularly neat aspect is its offline mode.
This means users can download maps of more than 100 countries and use them without having to pay for expensive wireless coverage while driving or hiking.
Until now Here navigation, which is standard issue on Windows phones, could only be found pre-installed on Samsung Galaxy devices.
In order to install Here properly, users will need to temporarily disable the phone feature which blocks apps from unknown sources.
