The shocked and angry jewellers and traders of main bazaar Ichhra gold market blocked the busy Ferozepur road after six armed men looted 340 Tola gold and jewellery items worth Rs 15.6 million from a jewellery shop here on Tuesday afternoon. The dacoits easily fled from the scene with the looted jewellery items spraying gunfire bullets in the area; killing one person and injuring a minor child.
Witnesses told Business Recorder that six armed men came on two motor cycles in the Ichhra main bazaar gold market at about 4 pm on Tuesday. Four dacoits took guard duty and two entered the Arshad Jewellery shop. On gun point they took away 4 kilogram gold and jewellery items (340tola) from the shelf and after indiscriminate firing escaped from the scene.
In a statement Lahore Division Sarafa and Jewellers Association comprising 50 Sarafa bodies said that such increasing and well-co-ordinated broad day dacoities/ robberies in the most densely populated urban areas had exposed the ineffectiveness of police force. Chairman of the Association Muhammad Ahmad, senior vice chairman Rana Muhammad Asghar, president Haji Muhammad Afzal and Additional General Secretary Malik Muhammad Tahir said that instead of protection of people especially traders, the police force was deployed on the guard duties of the government officials.
They said that the law and order situation had become worse and criminals were committing carmines unchecked and unabated. The gold and jewellery business has been ruined and the traders were worried about their protection. They demanded of the Punjab government to arrest the dacoits, recover the looted jewellery and immediately deploy police commandos at the gold and other markets for the protection of the customers and the traders.
