The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Wednesday issued notice to Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC), Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority (PNRA) and others to submit their respective replies in response to an application of two interveners seeking to join the proceedings against establishment of twin nuclear power plants in Karachi.
Headed by Chief Justice Maqbool Baqar, a division bench was hearing a petition filed by Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy, Dr Pervaiz Amirali Hoodbhoy and others, who had approached the court challenging SEPA's environmental impact assessment (EIA) report that accorded its approval to establishment of two nuclear power plants in Karachi.
The court extended till November 20 its injunction, barring PAEC from carrying out work on the nuclear power plants without adhering to the environmental laws. On Wednesday, the petitioner's counsel Abdul Sattar Pirzada requested the court to allow some time to seek instructions from his clients with regard to a counter-affidavit filed by Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC). He added that he has received a copy of the comments filed by Sepa the day before and would require some time for filing a counter-affidavit to the same also. The applicants, Amina Jilani and Roland De Souza filed the application requesting the court to allow them to join the proceedings. The court directed its office to mark on the application CMA number and issue notice for the next date of hearing.
