Shia leaders have demanded of the government to constitute a high-level judicial commission to probe into the targeted killings of the members of the community and bring the culprits to justice. Speaking at a joint press conference, here at Peshawar Press Club on Monday, Allama Abid Shakari said that the law enforcement agencies had completely failed to nab the culprits behind the killing of innocent people belonging to Shia community.
"Our silence should not be considered as weakness. We are peaceful citizens and believe in tolerance," Shakari added. He said that it was duty of the government and the law enforcement agencies to ensure safety and security to the life and property of the masses.
He claimed that the provincial government was well aware about the banned group involved in the targeted killings. Accompanied by Allama Irshad Hussain Khalili, Akhunzada Muzzafar and others, Shakari claimed that the agents of banned organisations were involved in creating sectarian disharmony and instability in the country. But, he said that they would never succeed in their nefarious designs. He said that police should take notice of intimidating letters, messages and threatening calls to the members of Shia community and unearth the group behind such activities to restore the sense of security among them. He demanded that the cases of targeted killings should also be registered under Pakistan Protection Ordinance (PPO) along with Anti-terrorism Act. He asked the government and the law enforcement agencies to conduct a clean up operation against the defunct organisations in Peshawar and other areas of the province.
