The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Thursday sought written arguments from all the parties in a case pertaining to the appointment of acting chairman Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) Pervez Rathore. Pervaiz Rathore's appointment notification was suspended by the IHC on July 15. However, the decision was later on overturned by the Supreme Court and Rathore was restored as acting chairman PEMRA.
A single-member bench of the IHC, Justice Noor-ul-Haq N. Qureshi, resumed hearing of a petition filed by Israr Abbasi, private member of the PEMRA, pleading in the court to declare Rathore's appointment null and void as it was in violation of Pemra regulations.
During the course of proceeding, the court said that it would decide the petition after reviewing written arguments of all the parties and directed the parties to submit their arguments on the next date of hearing. The court adjourned proceeding of the matter till November 28. Besides, the court also adjourned proceeding of a petition filed by former chairman PEMRA Chaudhry Rashid Ahmed against his removal from the post of chairman PEMRA, till November 28. Rashid was sacked from the post by the incumbent government on December 15, 2013.
It is pertinent to mention that Justice Noor-ul-Haq N. Qureshi had suspended June 24 notification pertaining to the appointment of acting chairman Pemra Pervez Rathore and appointment notification of Kamaluddin Tipu as executive member Pemra. However, a two-judge bench of the Supreme Court, headed by Chief Justice Nasir-ul-Mulk, overturned the IHC order and directed the IHC to decide the matter on merit.
